This month we thought we’d take a look at how to update your home even if you’re on a limited budget.
Probably the simplest, but most effective way to give your home a fresh look is to give it a deep clean. It’s easy to walk around your house day to day and not notice that things have become a bit .. well, grimy. We’ve all done it. When our home looks a bit tired, we take one room at a time and start from the top down, if it’s the kitchen, tiles, surfaces, cupboards, and work surfaces. It really does make a difference.
Next of course, there’s a lick of paint, it doesn’t even have to be a change of colour, although a new colour can be uplifting, you could just freshen up the colour that you already have. A new bright white coat of paint can make a room.
You could add new soft furnishings, cushions, or throws in coordinating colours. None of this has to be expensive, but can bring a dull room into focus, and make it look more appealing.
Even rearranging the furniture can give a room a whole new look, and if you don’t like it, then it’s simple to move it back again.
If your budget will run to it, then a new floor can make a huge difference to any room. If you’ve always had carpet, perhaps try a hard floor, wood if you can, or if not there are so many other options these days that imitate wood or tiles depending on your taste.
If you’ve lived for years with the same hard floor and fancy something a little cosier, the range of carpets is almost endless and doesn’t have to cost a fortune, especially in a smaller room.
Another fairly cost-effective idea is to update your lighting. A couple of new table lamps can not only update a room, but give a softer light than using overhead lighting, and also save power. Even a new light shade can make all the difference.
Of course, if you have more in your budget, new windows and external doors can not only make your home more attractive but save energy and money by making your home virtually draught free.
The range of doors and window frames available now is as wide as your imagination, everything from grey window frames to pink front doors. But as we mentioned above, even a good clean and a lick of paint can make all the difference.
